New Years Eve~

December 31, 2009 at 10:56 am (Uncategorized)

So, before I forget to say this, the glasses made it, Mom. I was able to finally give my family the gifts and they really seemed to like them.

Just wanting to say this, but I`m sitting here with my host sister waiting for Touhoushinki to preform on this music show thing. I fogot the name of it already. Beats watching the boxing matches I was watching earlier. xD Touhoushinki is awesome though~ Pluuuuuus, Arashi`s preforming later. 😀 Heck to the yes.

As for the driving thing I mentioned the other day…they`re crazy I want to say. I mean, they just drive around and swerve out of the way for other cars and stuff. I mean, yeah there`s a division between left and right and stuff, but on some roads that doesn`t seem to apply. Not to mention you pass cars well within touching distance. Crazy I say! But it`s pretty fun at the same time. Makes it exciting. xD

Oh yeah, and one more thing. Magazines are EXPENSIVE HERE. I was nearly floored when I looked at the prices of them yesterday. I bought one…but it was so expensive! I couldn`t believe it! Makes me feel…binbou. XD

Oh! This morning I sat with my sister and watched the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango dubbed in Japanese. Kinda funny. So glad I already knew what was going on. 😛 Not going to lie, but I like MatsuJun better as Domyoji. The Korean Rui is okay. Still like Oguri Shun.

Back to watching TV. 😛 Later~

Oh yeah~

My luggage finally decided to make its grand appearance! YES. I was so happy I wanted to tackle my suitcase and cry. XD We were supposed to get a call earlier according to United`s website, but we didn`t get one and we were calling around trying to find out about it and I wound up talking to someone I could barely understand because of their accent. I think they were Indian… At any rate, that was interesting. But I`m at least happy that I got my bag. So you can stop worrying, Mom. It`s all under control!

I think I said yesterday that I would finish recounting yesterday, oui?

Well, my host sister took me to Jusco, which is kinda like a mall I guess. Except it`s not like American ones where each shop has its own room with walls. There aren`t any walls in between the shops here. But it`s awesome! They have like…EVERYTHING. Not even joking. I love it. 😀 I also watched this funny Japanese comedian show and went to a Japanese video rental place. That was interesting and they have like…everything. All these American shows and stuff like House and CSI. Apparently my host family likes CSI New York? One of those other spin offs.

As for today, it was quite fun. Woke up and had breakfast while watching the end of Prison Break dubbed in Japanese. It was…interesting to say the least. I don`t know the plot of the show to begin with, so I was sitting there wondering why certain things were happening. Including the part the end where this one guy died. I think he was suposed to be sick.

Anyway, after that I went with my host dad to Kokusai Doori. In English I guess you`d call it Internation Street? Something like that. It was pretty awesome if you asked me. Reminded me of Soulard. Sorta. It`s very much different though. I actually saw foreigners for the first time since I got here. xD I thought that was funny. Apparently here in the southern part of Okinawa it`s hard to find them. While walking around Kokusai Doori, we visited a family friend that had introduced my host parents. So that was pretty cool and I got some tea and cheese cake. Speaking of getting things…I seem to get a lot of free stuff from people my host parents know. Free T-shirts…food…Makes me feel like I need to give people things in return…

And I`m sorry to cut this short, but I kinda wanna get off before this computer drives me crazy. It kees closing windows on me for no reason. My host sister says it`s always like that. I have no idea how she lives with it. XD

But just to remind myself of this, but I dunno if it`s just Okinawa, but they drive in quite an interesting manner here…

I`ll talk about that later. XD

ALIVE~

December 29, 2009 at 10:18 am (Uncategorized)

I would like to say that I`m fine and alive. I`ll try to make this quick since I`m using my host sister`s computer and the keyboard`s rather annoying. Because it`s so weird, the apostrophe looks really weird. The regular one isn`t here. 😛

In other news…I guess I should summarize my story from the beginning. Kinda went from plane to plane and on each one wound up sitting there for two hours before we even took off. On the one from Chicago to Japan I wound up in a completely different area than the rest of the people from YFU, but it wasn`t bad at all. I wound up sitting with this nice lady from South Carolina who was going to Thailand and a…well, I`m going to assume she was Chinese because I heard her speaking it. I did wind up locating the other YFU students at the back of the plane and we had our own little group chat back there which even included the…I think he was the head flight guy… Not quite sure what to call him. But he was awesome and spoke to us in Japanese since he`d studied it in college.

Landing at Narita Airport was super exciting. 😛 But then I had to wait ten thousand years from the other kids to get off. Otherwise, it wasn`t bad until I found out at the baggage claim that my bag had been left in Chicago…

Yeah. Just my luck. ^^; Still am waiting for my bag to get to Okinawa, which should be tomorrow according to the information I have. Can`t say I was prepared for that…

Anyway, after going to Narita I wound up going to a hotel where I had an awesome time with two other girls going to Japan. We had fun and me and one girl tried to get up to the roof at four in the morning because we couldn`t sleep anymore. Back to the Future was also on TV with Japanese subtites. There was also some German movie on later… Definitely interesting.

The next day …which was yesterday, I went with a bunch of other kids to Haneda airport folllowed by going with just two others to a plane destined for Okinawa. They were an awesome pair and I`m hoping to see them again. Honestly, I was about ready to freak out when I was getting off the plane because I was so nervous. When waiting for my new friends to get their baggage, they pointed out to me that there were people holding a giant sign that said my name on it. O_O I was really quakin` there. But…it was awesome. 😀 My host family is so cool.

I actually have more host brothers than I thought I did. There are actually three, but they`re married and don`t live at home… Well, actually the other one doesn`t either. Anyway, the family owns a car…taking care of business? Like, they hold cars for people when they go places.  So, anyway, when I was at the airport it was first just my host parents…and then all these kids showed up. O_O They were all my host…cousins? They were all so cute!

My youngest host brother actually speaks English. O_O He lived in Jackson, Florida, for about four years. So, he helps me when I need it. He also kinda looks like MatsuJun… A little. WEE BIT. Kinda funny. 😛

Yesterday night was my welcoming party, and that was really cool. The entire family was there pretty much which included the most adorable little kids I`ve ever seen. One is like…two and he just points instead of speaking and calls me Naa. (They were trying to get him to call me Nee nee which is something like older sister.)

What else…

I`ll try to upload pictures if I can soon of some of the things from yesterday. Also have some from today. 😀 I visited this friend of the family who has a niece that`s Japan`s best woman golfer. Pretty cool~

I feel like I`m using this too much now, so I`ll hush up for now and write more later. 😀 PROMISE.

Title translation: Last Day.

Today was my last full dan in America. o_o Oh. My. Gosh. AAAAAAAAAH! I’m trying to refrain from having a keyboard smashing spasm…

I’ll try to remain calm for this. 😀 Happy holidays to everyone! If you celebrate Christmas, Merry Christmas! I spent my Christmas with my family and went with my siblings to go so Sherlock Holmes. It was a good movie and I quite liked my Christmas. Not to mention the fact that it snowed, so it was a fairly white Christmas!

And…it’s currently growing late and I have yet to be completely packed. I’ve got my things most packed…just not totally. 😛 I’m trying not to forget things, so I’m taking it slow. Thus, my bag looks like:

I can’t think of much else to say. I guess for now I can say goodbye. Dunno if I’m going to write anything tomorrow morning. Probably not. Dunno if I’m going to have internet in Naha, but we’ll see. 🙂

またね!

More?

December 24, 2009 at 6:01 pm (Uncategorized)

Well, I didn’t have to wait until tomorrow to get everything. A man from YFU called and gave me the rest of the information since they’d just gotten the official stuff today. And I’m still going to Okinawa! 😀 To be more specific, I’m going to Kanagusuku, Naha-shi (金城,那覇市).

See the following visual representation for details:

Map of Okinawa (沖縄の地図)

The red arrow is pointing to where Naha is. 😀

Other than that, I know that I have my host parents, a host brother who’s twenty-six, and two sisters. There’s the one that emailed me the other day who’s seventeen and then another older sister who’s twenty.

It’s kind of weird to think that I’ll be kinda like…the baby of the family since I’m yonger than all of them.

So exciting! Tomorrow’s my last full day in the USA. o_o Oh. My. Goodness.

Host Family.

December 23, 2009 at 11:40 pm (Uncategorized)

Yes, I got a host family. 😀 Well, kinda I guess. I don’t know much of anything about them. Really all I got yesterday was an email from my host sister Yoko.  Don’t know much else about the family aside from that since the email was brief. We called YFU and they told us we’d probably be getting a phone call from them on Christmas day about the host family information for more details since my information’s coming so late…

Anyway, the verdict for the location is…I’m going to Okinawa (沖縄).  🙂 It’s kind of ironic that I’d be going there of all places since my cousin’s there on the military base, but yeah. That’s where I’m going. Shocking part is, it’s SO WARM there right now. Compared to here where it’s somewhere between thirty and forty, it’s like seventy degrees over there.

For a visual, see the following image:

Map of Japan (日本の地図)

Okinawa’s considerably further south than the rest of Japan as you can see. XD How awesome. I’ve had people tell me it’s kind of like a Japanese version of Hawaii, so that’s going to be super cool! I’ve also been looking up stuff about it, and it seems like a really nifty place to be perfectly honest. Very unique considering how it’s so far from the mainland, so they even have their own dialect that’s fairly difficult to understand.  I looked it upt for myself and…DANG. It almost doesn’t sound like Japanese. Kind of like a mix between Japanese and Korean or Chinese or something. (I’m going to assume that all that’s due to Okinawa pretty much being equidistant from Japan, China and Taiwan.) XD Looks like I’m in for a challenge. But I do accept this challenge~ It shall be awesome!

The most shocking part about hearing I was going to Okinawa was the fact that I wasn’t expecting to be sent somewhere so warm. Most of Japan’s similar to where I live in terms of temperature, so to suddenly find out I’m going to need sunscreen and the like was definitely an eye opener.

But it’s all going to be good. Very good~

In other news, I think I’m almost done shopping. I’ve got most of the gifts and I think I’m good on clothes. 😀

I think that’s all for now.

THREE DAYS UNTIL BLAST OFF. o_____o -spaz-

Excursions.

December 22, 2009 at 12:46 am (Uncategorized)

I’ve been taking quite a few trips lately actually. 😛 Went to the mall a few days ago for some clothes shopping. I might be going out again to do some more before I go so I can look nice and proper over there. My main problem is pants since I tend to wear jeans and they [YFU] suggested that we shouldn’t wear those. So, that’s that.

I also went to the bank today and got some yen for spending. Funny thing is my brother, mom and I were there talking about how weird it is to be getting some when all a sudden I hear the teller next to ours talking to her customer about yen. XD So apparently someone else was getting some, too. Very much amusing~

Finally, I got my trip information today. Not my host family things or anything…I still have YET to get that. -sigh- Only a wee bit irritating. I can live with that. At least, unless my case turns into one like the woman who’d done our phone orientation who didn’t get her’s until she got there because the information didn’t get to her house until after she’d left. That’d make me irked.

I’ll just keep my fingers crossed that I’ll get mine soon. 🙂 Only got so many days now before take off.

Scaryyyyy~

Ten what?

December 17, 2009 at 4:29 am (Uncategorized)

Ten. Days. WHOA. AAAAAAAH. I feel the panic.

Actually, should the truth be told that last statement would be stamped false. I’m actually quite calm. Still kind of find it hard to accept reality, but it’ll come eventually.

In other news, I had my JAFS phone orientation. Funny story behind that actually. I’d gotten an email last week saying there were times I could choose from. So I had picked this Wednesday, right? Well, today I looked at emails from the same address to find the time, and I realized that the confirmation email I had gotten said I was signed up for a Sunday. (As in this past Sunday.) Ha. Funny. That was great. Well, turns out we could just pop into the one tonight anyway, so we did.

It was alright. Didn’t feel like I learned too much. But one thing stood out that made me laugh:

“You’ll never beat a Japanese person in a gift giving game.”

I’ll keep that in mind. XD I’m already struggling with coming up with ideas for gifts.

Still no word on the host family and after the previous call we’ve been kind of nudged in the direction that taking a laptop isn’t a bright idea. Can’t say I think they’re completely wrong, but I’d prefer to type a record of the journey instead of handwriting due to the inefficiency of doing it by hand. Hopefully I be able to get my hands on a little internet access at night if the family doesn’t mind so I can blog. Otherwise I’ll probably resort to having a written journal and then posting up what I wrote/explanding that when I return.

We’ll see~

Phone Orientation.

December 15, 2009 at 2:48 am (Uncategorized)

So, I had my general YFU phone orientation today. It was not too bad. It was pretty funny how all five people there were going to Japan. Can’t wait to see all those people. 😀 As for the orientation in general, it was pretty informative. Some things I could’ve passed on hearing since it’s pretty much common sense or seemed a little silly, but that’s fine. It didn’t hurt anyone and I’m clearly still alive and kicking, so something went right. xD

But yeah. Kinda dozed off a little during some of the long explanations and did some other things at the same time, but overall it wasn’t bad. My mom was listening in, too, so she probably paid more attention than me.

I’ve got a JAFS specific orientation on Wednesday. That should be fun. Maybe I’ll hear from more people or some of the same ones I did today. 🙂 That’d be pretty nifty.

And I haven’t gotten my host family yet, but they said that that information should come this week or early next week at the latest. I’m hoping for this week since…y’know, might want to know if I should be worrying about colder weather or warmer weather. But, the news will come when it comes. I can’t make it come any faster as much as I’d love to.

Until next time~

Oh my~

December 13, 2009 at 3:53 pm (Uncategorized)

How many days until I go? Thirteen according to the calendar. Oh. My. Gosh. I’m half in denial about it since it just seems so…abstract almost. I’ve accomplished the task of speaking to all of my teachers, so I think I’m good there. Not quite sure what else I could be doing except planning what I’m going to bring, but that just seems silly. I’ll just pack what I need to when it gets closer to the departure date.

But I have gotten some ideas of what I want to get while I’m there. 😀 Mainly some books, games and clothes. I looked it up a couple days ago and Final Fantasy XIII comes out in Japan on the seventeenth, so I’m thinking I’ll get that along with a game for the DS since we have one. If I see anything I know a friend’ll want, I’ll get that too. So, if any of my friends are reading this and want me to fetch something should I see it, drop a comment and I’ll hopefully remember. (Seeing it would probably be reminder enough for me.)

I think that’s all really. Haven’t heard anything about a host family yet, so I’m guessing that’ll come in this week. Hopefully. I don’t see how it could come any later since y’know…week after next is take off. (REALLY?! AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH! )
